Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
