Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
